Why Cleat Maintenance Matters

If you ride with clipless pedals, those little plastic or metal cleats bolted to the bottom of your shoes do a lot of heavy lifting. Because they are "out of sight, out of mind," they often get ignored until you can't clip out in a hurry!

Why Cleat Maintenance Matters
Safety: Worn-out cleats can lead to "pre-release" (your foot popping out when you don't want it to) or, even worse, getting stuck when you’re trying to stop.

Knee Health: If your cleats shift or rotate because the bolts are loose, it changes your leg alignment, which is a fast track to localized knee pain.

Power Transfer: A secure connection ensures every bit of energy from your legs goes straight into the pedals.

Your 3-Step Cleat Inspection

1. Check the Wear Indicators:

Road Cleats (Plastic): Most have colored "wear pads." If the colored part is worn down to the black plastic, or if the edges look thin and frayed, it’s time for a new set.

MTB Cleats (Metal): Look for deep grooving or rounded edges where the metal meets the pedal. If clipping in feels "mushy" rather than a crisp "click," they are likely worn.

2. The Tightness Test:

Action: Grab your cleat and try to twist it by hand. It shouldn't budge.

Why: Walking in cycling shoes vibrates the bolts. Over time, they can loosed. Use a 4mm or 5mm Allen key to ensure they are snug (but don't over-torque and crush the sole!).

3. Clear the Gunk:

Action: Use a small screwdriver or a stiff brush to dig out dried mud, small pebbles, or road grit from the bolt heads and the springs.

Why: Debris in the bolt head makes it impossible to fit a tool in when you eventually do need to change them.

Pro Tip: The "Sharpie Trick"
Before you unscrew an old set of cleats, take a silver Sharpie or a marker and trace the outline of the old cleat on the sole of your shoe. When you bolt the new ones on, you can line them up perfectly with your previous position without having to guess your fit!

A fresh set of cleats is one of the cheapest ways to make your bike feel brand new again.
